Our poem embodies the purpose and goals of our project. Through the experiences and experiments on sustainability, our mission was to help Halau Lokahi students become proud
"stewards" of the land, as well as "stewards" of their culture. With the help of Kokua Kalihi Valley, six high school students mentored and documented our various activities in the valley. Jewal Allbrett, Mahealani Gascon, Kui
Hoomalu, Grayson Kauwe, Kaylyn Krael and Kalaheo Tolentino guided and mentored fifth and sixth grade students in stream studies, science experiments and cultural protocols. They were also responsible for videotaping,
editing and producing DVD presentations of the many activities which happened in the school years 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. These students also took their presentation to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Anchorage, Alaska and
conferences in Hawaii. For the last two years, these students have worked as a team up in Kalihi Valley. They have learned to respect and treasure this peaceful, lush valley. As Grayson's poem says, "We are forever. We will never be gone." This is the hope, the affirmation of this group called, Hawaii Alive. They want to preserve and perpetuate the culture, as well as their ahupua'a of Kalihi. |
